Burgas airport was the worst airport I've ever been in. It was overcrowded, about 5 flights were going out at the same time as us. It was unbelievable!! There were no seats, people were suffering of heat. Cafe and duty-free shops had mad prices and poor variety. Toilets were dirty and disguisting. There were no information about departure gates on screens till boarding! Staff was unfriendly and unhelpful. That was an awful experience.
Things will have changed dramatically since the opening of the new terminals... 150m East of the old ones. I haven't had to use it yet but I go into the area every other day on the bus and the place is unrecognisable from the 'Soviet Era' block that used to serve as a 'terminal'.
Everything, as described pre-2014 opening is absolutely true. Burgas was a tip and had the worst toilets in the World outside of Pakistan. I can't comment on current facilities, but have spoken to others who've used it and have heard no complaints. Word of advice. There are taxi companies offering rides to Sunny Beach, Nessabar and Elinet for 51 Lev. If you ask around... not in the airport you'll get cheaper by far. I heard mention of a shuttle to Sunny beach for 15 Lev?
Also if you are travelling light, there is a bus stop outside of departures and you can catch the number 15 to Burgas (20-25 minute journey for 1 Lev.) But travel light as the bus can be very busy and they don't make it easy for people with lots of cases!! You can also walk the 100 m to the roundabout with the flyover. On the opposite side from the airport on the left is a bus stop and from there you can pick up the bus to Nessebar and Sunny Beach... costs about 4-5 Lev. Again not recommended unless you are travelling light.
Terrible airport. No information about 2 hour delay. The original departure time of 22:15 just stayed on the screen. No WiFi, so no option to check anything. Had to call friends in home country to get info.
Toilets were terribly dirty. In the too small waiting area there is no airco, so too hot.
We were so happy we could board and leave Burgas International Airport behind us.
Since I posted my last review, dated 15th June 2014, I have had to use the airport for an internal flight to Sofia. Burgas, like so many airports has this amazing price structure for food and drink? From Varna, Plovdiv and Sofia airports, you can buy a can of Stella for about £1.75 - £2.25... in Burgas, the same can is almost £3.50!!! A sandwich is well over £4.50!!!
The toilets here are well maintained and cleaned to a very high standard. As is usual in Bulgaria, a small charge of 1 Lev is requested upon entry. (Currently £1 = 2.53 Lev). A word of warning about crowds.
As Burgas is the main airport for several holiday resorts... Sunny Beach being one example... arriving at departures is akin to walking through the gates of Wembley Stadium, when England play Scotland. The whole lounge can be filled to bursting as people struggle to get booked in. Have these people never heard of self booking? But far and away the biggest problem is the lack of seating. I would estimate in the whole area of the booking hall there are fewer than 100 seats!!! On one visit, there were 7 flights due to leave Burgas over the following hour... that's probably in excess of 1000 passengers... and Burgas airport offers 100 seats, usually filled with idiots in shell suits and covered in twattoos. Very little allowance is given to the elderly, the disabled or mothers with babies.
